Jake Long- Miami Dolphins

Jake Edward Long (born May 9, 1985 in Lapeer, MI) is an offensive tackle for the Miami Dolphins. He was drafted by the Dolphins first overall in the 2008 NFL Draft.  He played college football at Michigan. Previously he starred at Lapeer East High School in high school football, basketball and baseball. 

On June 16, 2004, following his freshman year, he was hospitalized in an ICU for smoke innhalation injuries when a house rented by nine Michigan Wolverine players caught fire. Long landed on a teammate’s automobile escaping the fire covered in soot at about 4:00 AM that Wednesday. Long was released from the  U of M Medical Center and was able to spend Father’s Day (June 20) back in Lapeer. When Long awoke to the sound of fire alarms, he attempted to exit his room, but was forced back by the smoke. He exited the building by jumping two floors after knocking out the screen in his bedroom window. Long endured procedures where tubes were put down his throat to suction black phlegm from his lungs at the hospital. The tubes also performed Long’s breathing while he lay unconscious for the first few days.

After surviving the fire during his second year of college, Long got a tattoo of Saint Joseph on his right bicep. His aunt had placed a card of the saint under his pillow while he was in the hospital in intensive care. He also has a tattoo of the family name on the back of his arm.  Jake also sports a tribal print on his left arm and a block  M in honor of his time at the U of  M.

Mike Hart-Indianapolis Colts

Leon Michael “Mike” Hart or simply Mike Hart was born on April 9, 1986 in Syracuse, New York. Mike Hart is an American football running back for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League. Mike Hart played college football at the University of Michigan, where he is the all-time leading rusher in the team’s history.

It was a Saturday night. His mother was in the front of the house hanging curtains. Mike Hart was in the back with his two younger brothers and older sister, keeping an eye on them, like he often did.

Mike Hart assumed his other sister, 2-year-old Kaitlyn, was with his mother in the front. His mother thought the little girl was in the back with the older kids.

No one saw her slip out the patio door and climb the four-foot ladder affixed to the aboveground pool. No one saw her enter the water.

When the family realized Kaitlyn was missing and frantically searched the house, it was Mike Hart who checked the pool. She was floating when he found her. He jumped in and hauled her to the side. His mother pulled her out and started CPR. His older sister called 911.

Rescuers estimated Kaitlyn was in the water for maybe a minute. She died on the way to the hospital.

Mike Hart was 8 years old.

Jeremy Shockey-New Orleans Saints

Jeremy Charles Shockey (August 18, 1980) plays tight end for the New Orleans Saints. He was drafted by the New York Giants 14th overall in the 2002 NFL Draft.  He played college football at the University of Miami.

When asked about his eagle tattoo: “I didn’t want something [that] 20 years later I’d be, Why did I get this?” says Shockey, who got the inking — his first — in the summer. “It speaks for itself. I’m proud to live in this country, to have the right to express anything you want…. I’m very American.” The tattoo took 21 hours over three days, including a stretch of 16 straight hours. Says Shockey, “Six hours in I was, like, ‘Just keep going.’ Definitely painful.”

I’m fascinated with tattoos…but I don’t have one.

I have a dream of one day creating a book with all the NFL players that sport a tattoo. I would like to have a profile of the player and some awesome shots of their tats. Until then, I’ll see what I can post on a blog and start my own collection of NFL Ink.
